Matthiola incana is one of the most popular plants for a cottage garden. It has been grown since Victorian times and combines a muted colour scheme with a strong fragrance. In ordinary gardens, it is usually around a foot or two high, with spikes of single or double one inch flowers in white or shades of pink, on tough plants with soft greyish leaves. Some varieties can reach up to 3' high, and provide useful material for vases indoors, both in formal and informal arrangements.
