Dianthus barbatus is a popular old-fashioned plant, ideal for a cottage garden, and useful as a cut flower. It is biennial, producing a rosette of long, thin, evergreen leaves in its first season. The following summer, it produces dense heads of clusters of small rounded flowers, often in two colours, each surrounded by a spiky calyx, on bushy, leafy plants. As the common name implies, the flowers are scented.
