Viola x wittrockiana hybrids are always popular plants for summer bedding. They come in a huge range of bright or sombre colours, often with black blotches around a yellow eye, and lines like cat's whiskers radiating from the centre. Flowers range in size from a couple of inches to three or four inches across, with petals soft and velvety or ruffled and frilly. These are perennial plants, although those treated as annuals provide a better show, with stocky plants holding larger blooms, in brighter colours, throughout the summer months.
Those grown for winter colour usually have smaller flowers in single shades.
Pansies need little attention, beyond removing dead flowers, to provide a carpet of bloom in almost any conditions.
