Astrantia major

Astrantia major is fast becoming a mainstay of cottage gardens, following the introduction of several hybrids with deep coloured flowers. They can now be found in all shades from white, through pinks to maroon.

Although members of the same family as the familiar Cow Parsley and similar weeds, Astrantia flowers look more like a daisy. They have a pincushion-like centre, which is composed of many small true flowers, surrounded by a ruff of bracts which resemble the petals of a daisy.

As well as being a useful plant for the garden, Astrantias are also good for cutting, and for dried flower arrangements.
