Gilia capitata is a hardy annual with stems reaching around a foot high, with deeply lobed leaves and tight, terminal clusters of blue flowers with prominent stamens in summer. Perhaps this is the reason for the common name - the flower head looks a bit like a pincushion with pins sticking in it.
