Aruncus dioicus is a useful plant to have at the back of the border, where it gives height, or in a semi-shaded area, where it gives a touch of light. Its flowers are similar to those of a Spiraea or Astilbe, but it is less fussy in its requirements, being happy in almost any position, from moist soils around pools, in shady woodland, or sunny borders. It forms a clump of woody stems with rough pinnate leaves, with tall spires of fluffy creamy-white flowers reaching 5' or so in summer.
As its name implies, the plant is dioecious, that is, there are separate male and female plants. The male flowers are larger and more conspicuous than the female.
