Berkheya purpurea is a very prickly plant. It produces large rosettes of prickly leaves, followed in summer by thick stems covered with rows of even more prickly scalloped leaves, as well as spiny leaves growing alternately up the stem, getting smaller as they near the top. The flowers are mauve daisies with purple centres, up to 4" across, borne both at the top of the stem in clusters of up to eight, all facing in different directions, and in the leaf axils.
