Dianthus hybrids are useful plants for every garden. They make neat clumps of evergreen grassy foliage, often tinged blue, which are ideal for the front of a border or on a rockery. They flourish in almost any soil, and can withstand neglect or drought. In summer, they produce short stems holding a loose cluster of rounded or fringed single or double flowers, usually fragrant. Flower colours range from white, through all shades of pink to maroon. They are good for cutting, lasting well in a vase, and they are easily propagated from the side shoots arising in the joints up the stem, as well as from seed.
