Tropaeolum majus

Tropaeolum majus is a favourite summer bedding plant, producing large flowers in bright colours even in bad weather and poor soil. Although most people probably grow Nasturtiums as bushy hummocks, allowing the wandering stems to creep along the ground, they are capable of scrambling over other plants, although they have no method of clinging or climbing.

Both the leaves and flowers can be eaten. The leaves have a peppery taste, and the flowers add colour to salads. The unripe seedpods can be pickled and used like capers.
