Campanula rotundifolia is an elegant plant found in dry grassy places and along streamsides in open woodland. The basal leaves are round or heart-shaped, but the leaves up the stem are narrow and pointed. The stem is thin and wiry, with a few delicate pale blue pixie-hat flowers near the top. It spreads by means of thin roots as well as by seed.
One explanation for the name Harebell is that the flowers were little bells that sounded a warning to hares when danger threatened - it certainly grows in places where hares might live!
