Lathyrus odoratus has always been one of everyone's favourite annuals. It is a climber, happy to scramble over fences and bushes, or up sticks and obelisks to form a neat pyramid of colour. Its winged flowers sometimes have fluted petals, with three to six flowers on each firm stem. They are welcome indoors for their perfume.

Seed Pod The seed pod is a slightly fuzzy pea pod, opening into two halves along the sides,
often curling as they open.
Seed The seeds are dark brown woody peas. There are several seeds in each seedpod.
Seedling The first shoot is long and thin, followed by a pair of rounded leaflets.
Seeds often germinate faster if the seedcoat is nicked slightly and the seed soaked in warm water
before sowing.
