Lamium album does not look much like Stinging Nettle, despite its common name. It is a much shorter and denser plant, usually growing to less than a foot high, with crinkled toothed leaves in opposite pairs up a square stem. The flowers are fairly large, white and hooded, and grow in whorls round the stem, each in a spiky calyx. It flowers from spring to autumn, in woods, hedges, and on waste ground. White Deadnettle has no stinging hairs, but is softly hairy.

Lamium album has been used in herbal medicines to treat chest and kidney problems, as a relaxant, and to help heal wounds.

Young shoots and leaves can also be eaten as a vegetable.

When I was a child, we used to pick the flowers and suck the nectar from the base.

Seed Pod There is no seed pod. The seeds are at the bottom of the calyx. Seed The seeds are like caveman clubs, wider and rounded at the top. There are four seeds from each flower on the flower spike. Seedling The seedling has crinkled leaves.
