Reseda luteola is quite a conspicuous wildflower, despite its colour. Stem, leaves and flowers are in shades of green, but the plant is tall enough to be noticed on woodland edges or rough ground, usually on chalky soils. The basal leaves form a smallish rosette, and are long and narrow, often with wavy edges. The branching stem bears long narrow spikes of small greenish flowers. The seed pods hold many seeds, which attract Goldfinches and other birds in autumn, as well as small mammals which eat the fallen seed.

The seed and leaves contain chemicals formerly used to make a yellow dye.
